Arte africano Benin Bronze Age In the kingdom of Benin, what is now known as Nigeria, in the mid-14th and 19th centuries, sculptures made of ivory, iron, terracotta, bronze and wood were very common. These statuettes were made in honour of the monarchs, social activities and divinities in which the inhabitants believe. The most outstanding form of art are the masks, since for them it denotes great importance in rituals and their culture. They believe that by putting them on, they are not themselves and can play the role they want without conflict. They have great meaning in celebrations such as the puberty of adolescents and in their religious beliefs, considering that these contain protective and sometimes malevolent spirits. Despite having various European influences due to the colonization of Africa, these populations have not lost their essence and their customs, they continue to maintain their lifestyle, the cultural changes that have occurred in a few settlers are the acceptance of Christianity and Islam, but their crafts remain intact, still maintaining the origin and folklore of this continent.
